today’s modern society. Research on tobacco smoking and second-hand smoke has established
countless downsides to the practice, especially from the perspective of health. Indeed, scholars
have expressed their concerns regarding cigarette smoking, pinpointing it as one of the leading
causes of preventable death across the globe. Despite the widely researched and discussed
detrimental effects of cigarette smoking, the topic of banning the practice from public spaces has
remained controversial. Regardless, governments around the world have been working hard on
establishing legislation on smoke-free public spaces. Cigarette smoking should be banned in
public places since it poses various health concerns, it causes environmental pollution, and it
greatly affects non-smokers.
Cigarette smoking in public spaces is one of the major health hazards that must be
considered carefully. According to Monson and Arsenault (2017), cigarette smoking causes
around 6 million deaths annually, with more than 600,000 victims being non-smokers. This
