store
From: Yijia Zhai, Communication and Social Media Manager, Communication Project
RE: U.S. Gender Discrimination at the Workplace
Recent allegations of gender-based discrimination at the company’s Ottumwa
Supercenter store will have an undesired effect on the morale of Walmart’s
employees. Specifically, it was alleged that the store manager failed to promote one
of the employees working at the store based on the assumption that she would quit
her job due to her having a newborn (Turner, 2022). The EEOC investigated the
issue before it was taken to court (Segal, 2022). This memo aims to offer insights
into how the management team at the Ottumwa Supercenter store will communicate
to the press and employees.
The challenge
The stores’ management team must decide how they will communicate with
the press and employees to defend their decision not to promote the employee who
is alleged to have been discriminated against based on gender. The best
communication approach should be used to safeguard the company’s already fragile
reputation since the press is aware of the issue and the company has faced similar
allegations in the past. Additionally, the stores’ management team must decide how
to communicate with the employees to prevent them from feeling demotivated.
The moral issue is whether Walmart’s management team at the Ottumwa
Supercenter store failed to promote a female employee who had recently had a
1

newborn baby because it was assumed that she would quit. In other words, if the
allegations are true, it would imply that the employee was discriminated against
based on her gender. Also, considering that she was expecting the promotion, it
means that she was fully qualified for the position but was overlooked because she
had recently given birth.
The three stakeholders affected by the allegations are customers, the
company’s investors, and employees. Foremost, the allegations are expected to
affect the morale levels of Walmart’s employees, especially those who can relate to
the victim. Low employee morale levels can lead to low productivity and increase the
company’s employee turnover rates. Additionally, Walmart may face difficulties
recruiting top talent in the job market due to its damaged reputation (Rukshani &
Senthilnathan, 2014). However, the effect on employees is voluntary because they
can continue to perform at the highest level.
Secondly, if employees’ performances at the store decline, customers and
investors will be affected. Specifically, customers will receive poor services from
employees who are not motivated to work at the store. However, since customers
can decide to purchase products from other retailers, we can also conclude that they
can voluntarily choose whether to be affected. Lastly, the effect on investors will be
involuntary because they cannot choose not to be affected. Specifically, if Walmart’s
reputation and the morale levels of employees are affected, Walmart’s financial
performance will also be affected (Rukshani & Senthilnathan, 2014). Therefore, the
company will fail to create value for its investors.
