Empathy allows us to connect with others by sharing their experiences and feelings of
compassion for them. This rare human ability leads to improved social integration between
people. If I were the head of marketing for any business and received such a letter, I would have
replied differently than Stacey Barnes. This is because the reply could have been more personal,
but rather, it was very official. Being considerate, sharing in, and taking care of other people’s
emotions, especially those living with and battling cancer, is significant for individuals (Depow,
Francis & Inzlicht 2021). This is called empathy. Even though this human construct logically
comes to some people, it may feel like a whole scuffle to others.
A study has found that only 20% of Americans are innately susceptible to empathy.
Ideally, such people are gifted in the area of emotional understanding of other people’s pain and
struggles (CTCA, 2020). The more significant percentage are left with a task to work extra
harder to gather feelings of compassion that come with being selfless and putting ourselves in
