What approach should the U.S. (and/or the world) pursue to insure adequate energy for developing sustainable economic growth, given a growing population, without endangering the climate, nor incurring economic dependence on an “unfriendly” nation? (Note, this question has a number of competing constraints. When you see or hear a question or problem presented this way, the solution will be found in some type of “optimization” approach, that will never perfectly satisfy all of the constraints simultaneously!)
One helpful way to begin, might be to reflect on what you have learned about risk assessment (a function of both “hazard” and “exposure”)…and broaden your thinking to include “economic” hazards and exposures.
